I breathe, again
Oct. 11th, 2007 09:39 amI presented my paper. I drank some wine. I listened to intelligent people discuss my paper. I went home and watched Firefly.
The contents of the paper ended up quite good, I think. This was thanks, in large part, to
zcatcurious spending some of his precious, precious time (when he should have been marking essays or writing a chapter of his own work) vetting it, and making me explain random specialist jargon, and showing me where it didn't connect.
The presentation of the paper, on the other hand, sucked big time. This was a surprise to me, because I like to think that when I'm up the front and I've got past the first five minutes of shaking, I'm not bad at presenting stuff. I think where I went wrong this time was in accepting the chair, and trying to present sitting down. Give me a lectern, somewhere to place my paper, and something to do with my feet (i.e. stand) and I think I am more comfortable. Preacher's kid practice, perhaps. Also, I had only really read through it once between finishing it at midnight the night before and presenting it at 4pm.
It was a shame that it was on a Tuesday, as it meant that many of the people who would have liked to be there weren't. In the audience (15) there were a total of 3 people who were neither students or teachers of mine at some stage. Thanks to the students who came and supported me!
Yesterday, then, I spent some time feeling empty and directionless, and then pursuaded myself that, though it was grey outside, it was a good time to do planting and stuff. I planted my wild irises, and the miniature orange tree in clay soil, but with plenty of compost and stuff. The clay where I was planting the orange tree was easy to dig, so I made the hole quite large, and used the clay to build up the edges of a bed where I was planting the irises, because it was impossible to dig deep there.
Then I gave 100s of spiders the eviction notice. I did my best not to kill them, and to pursuade them that they really wanted a tree-house. We'll see how many come back. I'm very impressed with how I handle spiders now, having once been so petrified that I couldn't go into a room knowing there was one, somewhere. Maybe my brother was good for something after all. He was always fascinated with insects and crawly things, and now is working on a PhD studying said crawlies.
doc_spatial, it's quite safe to visit our place now!
Today I'm planning on doing something to this wedding dress that I'm meant to be making. It's scaring me a lot, and the bride will be in town this weekend, so it will be good to see what she thinks. Or not! However, it is also sunny outside, so I might have to 'study' on my beanbag for a bit.
And my supervisor is coming to lunch on Sunday, so I have to tidy my office, so I can show it to her. The office is where we usually pile everything that we 'tidy' out of the front room, so that's going to be a mission!
