The Death of Hope

zcat_abroadLast Friday, at 7am, the Book'o'Doom(TM) arrived on my doorstep. Such a small box, in a HUGE plastic sack, to have caused so much sleeplesness.
I had only had 5 hours sleep, but I sat up and read through the intro, conclusion, and much of the 5th chapter. It turns out that the book is both the thesis from which I had been working, AND the complete survey of all the texts (and images and other references) of Æthelthryth.
I am slowly digesting it, finding a few places where I could pick a fight with author, but mostly thinking about how I'm going to twist my topic. I'm sure I can find a way, but mostly I'm still processing the fact that my thesis as Æthelthryth is doomed, and I'm soooo weary. Apologies to those who I cried on at the weekend.

1. My username iszcat_abroad because I have shared an email with zcatcurious, under zcatcurious, since before we were married. It was easier to communicate with him through the same email while I was in Thailand and he was in NZ. So when we went to China, and I signed up with LJ, I wanted to keep some of that identity. However, I thought he might want to join LJ (which he did, after some persuasion), so I adjusted the name to show it was me. It is a pun, as I am the female of the pair (a broad, in colloquial slang), but also describes how I feel generally - no matter where I am, I don't quite belong.
2. My journal is titled "Zcat Wandering" because I was, and also as a bit of a pun on wandering/wondering.
3. My subtitle is "Muses from Strange Countries" because of a couple of things. The first was that I was reacting to China, and expecting to go to other countries soon. Then there is the idea of my mind being a strange country in and of itself.
4. My friends page is called "Friends" because I didn't know you could name them!
5. My default userpic is
because it is the large inital on the Peterborough Bede, one of the prettier Bede texts. The first record of St Æthelthryth's life is in Bede.
