November's gone.
Dec. 1st, 2007 09:49 amTime to knuckle down and do some real work.
Random thoughts of the past week:
1) The way to get a balanced persepctive on something like the Medieval Church is to first read a book written by a disapproving CoE person, who barely allows for the idea that anyone was really serious about their religon before the Reformation, but is informative on how the various layers were constructed. THEN read a book on the lead-up to the Reformation, and its immediate aftermath, written by an Irish Catholic who wasn't happy about the removal of the more interesting parts of worship as a result of the Vatican 2. Both quite skewed readings, but good to read together.
2) Moving the fishbowl (newly restocked with 5 White Cloud minnows, 5 leopard danios, and an algae-eater) into my office has motivated me to spend more time in there, which, in turn, leads to more focused reading than I get out in the living room. Don't ask me why, as I still have a window to look out, and fish to watch...
3) I need to do a big transplanty thing in the garden: moving the tomato plant into a bigger pot, which is currently housing the native plants I weeded from the lawn, which I want to place in a holding nursery under one of the trees, which is currently holding the wild irises, which aren't getting enough sun, which I want to move to beside the washing-line where the tomato is. The trouble is, I'm not sure where in that ring I should start. Oh, and my black pansies are looking great.
4) I really want to finish the corset I started making immedieately after term finished. But it will require me moving the fish back into the lounge, as I'm sure they won't appreciate the vibrations the sewing-machine will produce when set up on the desk. Also, I'm a bit afraid. It looks good so far, but I want to do top-stitching (for which I will get to use my hand-operated Singer for the first time), and I'm afraid I won't be as neat as I should be.
--------------
Goals for this next week include: spending a day in the libary (which is, once again, MINE - no students!!) tracking down manuscripts; discovering an unedited text of the Life of St Edburga of Winchester in Middle English, which will back up my first chapter on the Middle English Life of St Edith; sewing that corset.
